Northwood "Tree-of-Life"

There is some debate as to whether the square footed Northwood "Tree-of-Life" pieces are really footed bowls or compotes. It appears to me that the square footed pieces should be called footed bowls, the small eight-sided base pieces are likely card trays (when open flat) or some other kind of holder. The large 12-sided pieces are definitely large enough and high enough to qualify as true compotes, though the ones flattened down would be more likely used as a cake stand.
I'm not sure where the "Tree-of-Life" name came from since close inspection will reveal that the pattern actually appears to be grass-like reeds, not tree bark. I suspect that the name came from our friends, the carnival collectors. A few rare pieces are known that do not have the pattern on the foot.
The large pieces often have the characteristic N-in-a-circle trademark evident in the stem of the base and occasionally on the upper surface. The small comports also have these marks, but the square footed bowls have no mark.
